Dachshund Illnesses And Cure Tips
You feel that you have been taking good care of your Dachshund since the day he entered your door. But despite your best efforts to ensure his health, sickness will always find its way to invade your dog’s life. Some of these illnesses are common and curable. But these common and curable illnesses can be the way to serious and dangerous disease if left untreated at the right time.
A Dachshund is characterized with long spinal column and short rib cage. That is the reason why they are more prone to health problems related to spine. They are more likely to suffer intervertebral disk disease, one of the most common canine back problems affecting Dachshund dogs. Intervertebral disk disease occurs when the jelly like in the inner layer of the disk protrudes through the fibrous outer layer into the vertebral canal and presses on the spinal cord.
This intervertebral disk disease comes in three types. Type 1, usually appears in dogs three to six years of age. In this type, the rupture in the vertebral canal may increase because the disks of dogs become more like cartilage than fibrous tissue. Type 11 is just a partial protrusion and appears in dogs six to ten years of age. Type 111 is usually rare but causes damage the most. In this type, the disc herniates severally and may actually enter the spinal cord and cause severe damage. This damage may be so severe and incurable and may require euthanasia.
A dachshund suffering from this disease may feel pain in the region of the neck and weakness or paralysis in the limbs. IVDD can be treated through anti inflammatory medication and in surgery in serious cases to relieve the spinal cord. Other treatments include hydrotherapy, massage and herbal homeopathic treatments.
Diabetes is another disease that may affect your Dachshund. Diabetes is common to dogs especially to obese ones. A dachshund with diabetes may want to drink more and urinate more. Other symptoms include weight loss, increased appetite, dehydration and cataract formation. Diabetes left untreated may result to ketotic and additional symptoms such as depression, weakness, vomiting and rapid breathing may be experienced.
Canine diabetes is treated through careful diet and insulin therapy, just like in humans. Foods rich in fiber and carbohydrates are recommended to dogs with diabetes.
Some Dachshunds are found out to have urolithiasis, a disease caused by excessive amount of crystals in the urinary tract. Symptoms of this disease include frequent urination, bloody and dribbling urine, weakness, depression, loss of appetite, vomiting and pain. Contact your veterinarian for recommendations on treatment when your dog has any of these symptoms.
Selective breeding plays an important role in prevention of these diseases. Dogs with any of these diseases should not be included in breeding to prevent dogs from acquiring disease.

Dachshunds as Pets
The Dachshund or weiner dog as they as lovingly referred in one of the more distinctive appearing dog breeds available. This clever and lively short-legged dog knows how to win over hearts of people eveywhere.
The name Dachshund literally translates from German to mean badger dog. This is because the breed is known for its use exterminating badgers by being the right size to flush them from there burrows. The dog was also used for rabbit and fox hunting, locating wounded deer, and even to participate in boar hunts.
The first documentation of the Dachshund comes from the mention of them in a book in the early 1700′s. Over time the dog has become a symbol of Germany, and this led to a decline in their popularity during World War I. The Roaring Twenties saw popularity start to make a comeback, with the height for them being a mascot named Waldi for the 1972 summer Olympics.
The general appearance of the Dachshund includes the long-bodied, short-legged, and prominent pointy nose. They also come in three recognized sizes with weight being the difference beween the types. The standard Dachshund averages sixteen to twenty-eight pounds, while the miniature usually weighs less than eleven pounds, and the karichen weighs in at seven to nine pounds.
The coat of a Dachshund can come in a variety of colors and in three different textures. The coat textures are smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired; with the smooth-coated being the most common while the wire-haired is the least common. There are many color variations in the breed with the most dominate being red and black-and-red. Other kennel club recognized colors are cream, blue, chocolate brown, fawn, brindle, piebald, and light red. The dog also comes in a solid black or solid chocolate brown, but these are not recognized variations and are disqualified from competitions.
The Dachshund breed has a very complicated personality which can make the animal a challenge to own for some people. Overall the dog is has a fun, playful personality with a great fondness for chasing tennis balls. The breed is also known for devotion and loyalty which also makes it prone for seperation anxiety. This causes the dog to whine excessively and chew on items in the home to relief stress. The Dachshund also has a tendency to dig holes in yards amd they can be wonderful watchdogs. For some individuals the stubborn tendency of the breed make them a challenge to train and if raised improperly they can become agressive and fearful.
The biggest health risk to the dog is intervertebral disk disease, this is caused by the longer than usual spine combined with a short rib cage. This condition is hereditary in nature and many breeders are working to rid the breed of this genetic problem. To avoid this disease the dog should always be held properly, they should also be encouraged not to make big jumps from furniture or stairs, and at all times they should be the optimal weight as obesity can worsen the effects.

A Brief History of the Dachshund Dog Breed
The Dachshund dates back to the 15th century. The Germans actually developed this breed to help control the badger population. The Germans where looking for a dog breed that was strong enough to fight badgers. Since badgers lived in burrows in the ground, they needed a dog slender enough to fit down the badger’s burrow. What they came up with was the Dachshund.
The name Dachshund came from putting two words together. The word dachs means “badger” and the word hund means “dog” thus, the name Dachshund. Germans also refer to this breed as the “Teckel” which in old German means Dachshund.
Many people think that the French Braque (small pointer-type) and the Pinscher where used together to develop the smooth-haired Teckel. During the French revolution many nobles where forced to flee France into Germany taking their favorite hunting dogs with them. At this point the German Teckel and the French Bassets where crossed and the result became the Dachsbrackle if it had longer legs and the Dachshund if it had short legs, short ears, and a painted muzzle.
The Dachshund developed into a great hunting dog. They where not only proficient at hunting Badgers but, they where very good at hunting fox, rabbit, and tracking wounded deer. They where also used in packs during hunting.
Once the breed became popular in Britain the British changed the dog a little. The breed became longer, the dog weighed more, and the legs actually got shorter. This was a fairly big change considering originally there where two types, the Miniature that weighed less than 11 lbs and the Standard that weighed 18-20 lbs. At this point the German Teckel breeders felt that the English caused the breed to be incapable of doing the work it was breed for.
In WWI the breed dwindled in numbers in Britain as the British took a dislike to anything German, this was also true in the United States.
The breed appeared in the U.S. in the early 19th century. German immigrants brought their dogs over with them. The breed became very popular in the U.S. In 1885 the American Kennel Club began to register Dachshunds and in 1895 the Dachshund Club of America was organized. In 1935 Dachshunds where added to the AKC Field Trials and the breed has been going strong ever since.
