Choosing a Pet? Things to Consider Before Choosing a Pet
Consider whether you have time for a pet. They look to you for their food, water, veterinary treatments and love. If your children cannot or will not care for the pet, do you have time to do it. Did you know that in over half of households the female spouse or family member ends up taking care of the family dog or pet.
Now this is pretty much common sense but you should think about whether you are allowed to have a pet where you currently reside. Check the regulations if your are a tenant. If pets are allowed are you prepared for the extra amount of deposit money that will be required. Are you prepared for the carpet cleaning necessary when you move? These an other questions should be considered if you are a renter.
How many years are you willing to commit to this new pet? A pet can be a lifelong commitment depending on how old you are when you choose a puppy or other young pet. Personally I had a Dachshund that was with us for 17 years. Cats can live from 10 to 20 years subject to certain medical issues. Other pets like horses, turtles, parrots and other types of birds can live quite a bit longer even 30 to 40 years.
None of us have a crystal ball so we do not really know when we will get married, get divorced, relocate sometimes to another country, have children or maybe have grandma move in with us, you know, the one that hates animals. Do your best to look into the future to where a pet will fit in. Once adopted your pet becomes part of the family or to him, the pack. Later separation is hard on everyone.
If you should decide to choose a puppy or any type of young pet please know that younger animals require a lot more time to learn the ropes than adult dogs do. Plus, younger animals, especially dogs, do not appreciate being left alone. This is one way separation anxiety develops.
Younger animals need to be taught how to behave in the family or the pack. This cannot completely be done if the house is empty all day. Just as with children, traits developed at the younger ages are traits that stay with them most if not all of their lives. Proper training and interaction at the younger age will pay great dividends immediately and in later years.
Believe it or not there are many more considerations when choosing a pet. Those I will touch on in a different article. For now let me leave you by strongly suggesting that you make the decision about choosing a new pet a family decision.

World’s Greatest Dog Has Very Bad Day – We Learned New Tricks!
Thinking about inviting manâs best friend to share your home? I love dogs, all types! My husband and I have 4 dachshunds. They each have their individual personalities. The youngest one, Cricket, barks whenever she wants to communicate anything â âHey, share your chips/dinner/beer with me!â âI know you are on the other side of the door, so let me in.â âDo you realize itâs time for dinner???â Our first dog, Daisy, talks by making a combo howl-whine noise to communicate. Precious is the timid one and habitually wears a worried expression. She lets you know when she wants to go outside, but insists that you accompany her all the way outside and remain until she is finished! Danny, our only male, struts around like he own the place and well, actually, I think he is the self-appointed czar of the household!
Â
Iâm a firm believer that your pet must fit your living quarters and lot size as well as your life style. Is your big dog going to be comfortable in your one bedroom apartment with little or no yard? Is your Chihuahua going to calmly lounge around your home peacefully while you are at work all day or to turn into Nervous Nellie and shred the drapes? How are they around children or other dogs? Some dogs, like our dachshunds enjoy being in pairs and are better behaved if left in the company of another one of their kind. Left alone, we found that Danny would help himself to bottles of our drinking water, opening one at a time and dumping the contents. Iâm no forensics expert, but I saw tooth marks on the lids and the evidence was left near his bed! He also had a nasty habit of tearing up cardboard boxes and eating wicker trash cans! My point is, it is best to thoroughly research different breeds, and visit people who own these dogs in various stages of development. Also, visit doggie day cares and speak to the proprietors about types of dogs you are considering. BestDog, glowdog.com is a website dedicated to assisting you with sorting through all the doggie choices available.

We have only wood floors in our house, but many of you have carpet and youâll find this story especially interesting! I went for a visit recently to my daughterâs home. She and her husband have two wonderful boys whom I love to pieces and the best dog in the world! He is a wonderful mutt dog that allows the kids to sit, crawl, hug or whatever they want to do on or to him. Their dog recently developed an internal infection and as a result had a really bad day resulting in, you guessed it, a big mess on the wheat colored carpet! Removing the mess left an ugly stain on the carpet, so thatâs where I came in. Since I am a Shaklee distributor and sell environmentally friendly cleaning products, I was invited to apply my expertise to the âproblem area.â Man, was I sweating this one! What if my miracle products didnât perform? Fortunately, they did and I have the before and after pictures to prove that Shakleeâs Get Clean Nature Bright did the trick! No pun intended (Ok, maybe just a little pun intended!) Dogs Make Me Smile
I am the owner of two miniature dachshunds who share my house and home. Many dog owners would rephrase that and instead call me the human who shares the house with the dogs. Dogs are indeed wonderful creatures.
Recent experiences have made me reflect upon and notice things about dogs and their presence in my life. I grew up with dogs so was taught at a young age to appreciate and treat animals with loving care. I recall clearly watching our pet Boston Terrier comfort my little brother who sat on the floor crying about something.
My friend came over to walk the dogs today and as she stood on the doorstep Peanut, my 12 pound dachshund stood up to lick her face. I belong to a PLR site for dog articles and there have been several written on this topic – all as if this was a bad thing. This got me thinking…..
Both dogs lick my face when I’m in bed and I call this “kisses”. Peanut will go so far as to stand on my chest with all four paws so he can give my full face a wash including my eyes. This usually only happens every couple weeks yet I endure because he’s my dog. Bark goes after my husband more because the only time he gets to lick his face is in bed whereas I’ll sit with them during the day.
My dogs also jump up on me when I walk in the door and will do this with others they know. Again, the articles say this is bad and that you should train your dog to quietly accept a short pat on the head as a way of greeting. When my two dogs have been apart for as little as ten minutes they greet each other very enthusiastically. Why shouldn’t they greet me and my friends in the same fashion.
I’ve decided that regardless of what the articles may say, I’m all for having my dachshunds jump up and lick my face. First of all, they’re just being dogs and second of all they are my friends and they don’t know any other way of saying hello. I figure if they can make me smile and laugh it can’t be all bad!
