Dorgi Puppy & Dog Information

The Dorgi is a crossbreed variety of dog. This unique hybrid is the result of crossing a Welsh Corgi and a Dachshund, classified as an F1. Since the Dorgi is a crossbreed, the appearance can vary. The ears will resemble those of the Corgi parent. And, like the Dachshund and Corgi, the Dorgi has a low maintenance coat.

Both the Welsh Corgi and the Dachshund are fun-loving, good natured and love the company of humans. Affectionate and intelligent, both breeds and take well to training, though the Dachshund can be somewhat stubborn.

Subsequent breedings to the F2 or F3 level can dramatically alter the temperament and appearance from the original F1. Given the diversity of these traits, it is hard to predict at this time which characteristics will dominate.

Approximate Adult Size

As with many hybrid breeds, size and weight will vary. The approximate adult size, two years old or older, of either the male or female Dorgi is 10 to 15 inches at the withers. The withers are measured at the highest point of the shoulder. Adult dogs can weigh between 18 and 25 pounds.

Special Health Considerations

Most dog breeds have certain health conditions problems associated with that specific breed. Dachshunds are prone to weight-related problems such as diabetes so be mindful of the Dorgis diet. Welsh Corgis have a lower incidence of health problems than most breeds. As with most hybrids, a full understanding of potential health issues is difficult to ascertain at this time.

This disease list is provided only as an informative guideline and your Dorgi may not experience these conditions. Consult a veterinary professional for more comprehensive information.

As with any dog, the puppy stage, 0 to 12 months of age, is the time for shots, boosters and check up. As an adult, the dog should have an annual veterinary checkup that includes a dental exam and cleaning. Avoid feeding your dog sweets and other human foods.

Grooming

If the Dachshund is the short hair variety, the coat of Dorgi will be generally smooth and short with little shedding. If the Dachshund is a long hair, regular brushing will help maintain a clean and healthy coat. The Welsh Corgi does shed but regular brushing will take care of that. The process of grooming provides an opportunity to examine the dog for skin problems and the presence of insects like fleas and ticks. Regular grooming helps to strengthen the emotional bond between you and your dog.

Dental health is important and the teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities and periodontal disease. Poor canine dental hygiene can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and serious health conditions resulting from uncontrolled infections.

The claws should be trimmed regularly and the paws examined for signs of injury.

Dorgi Life Span

With proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions, a Dorgi should be able to live a long and healthy life. Given the hybrid nature of these dogs, an accurate prediction of life expectancy is not possible at this time.

Find Out Whether the Daschund Breed is the Right One for You

The Daschund breed of dog is the wiener or sausage dog with a long narrow body and short legs.

They are very active and loving dogs that work great in a family with or without children. You do need to be attentive to them because they always want to have company around them. In spite of this, this breed of dog is not for every pet owner. For one thing, these dogs are very independent and stubborn and therefore are a challenge when you start to train them. However, once you start using incentives, such as bits of food or treats, they are very anxious to please and will learn very quickly. They also love praise and petting with lots of hugs.

Because of the origins of their breeding, these dogs are naturals for digging holes. They were bred to hunt badgers in Germany and the name means ‘badger hound? For this reason, you cannot this dog loose in your flower bed or vegetable garden and if you do let it loose outside, make sure it is in an area where it won’t matter if the dog digs holes.

It may not be a good idea to choose the Dachshund as your pet if you work all day and have to leave the dog alone. This is because when it is left on its own, it will whine constantly until you return home. However, if you do have a tape recording of your voice that will play over and over, this could alleviate the stress the dog is feeling because of the lack of companionship.

If you have small children, the Dachshund makes a wonderful pet once it is properly trained. If you haven’t yet trained the dog to be around children, you should never leave it along with them.

Dachshunds do not like being teased and as a result will nip at a child that does tease it. These dogs also have fragile spines, so they do not hold up well to being handled in a rough manner. This is especially true if you have a miniature Dachshund.

Even when you have the dog house trained, you need to be prepared for accidents on your carpet or other flooring. They do not like going outside in cold temperatures for their potty needs and would just as soon use the rug on the living room floor. No matter how well trained the pet is, you will never find a Dachshund that will not go in the house at some time or another.

Since this breed of dog has a hunting instinct, it is not a good idea to have one in your home if you have smaller pets, such as a guinea pig, a hamster or even a small kitten. If you get a Dachshund and a kitten at the same time, you may have some success in teaching it to get along with this pet, but you always have to be on the lookout that it is not hunting the kitten as prey.

A Dachshund is very intelligent and you have to set yourself up as the leader of the pack from day one. If not, the dog will rule your household.

Consider the Chweenie as Your Next Dog!

Mull over the Chweenie! Huh, you say?! The Dachshund Mix is a unique breed, merging all of the good characteristics of its relatives, the Chihuahua and the Miniature Dachshund.wholesale dog breeders do not produce this odd combination deliberately; but natural desire sometimes insists and voila! The part of the name “weenie” is taken from the nickname for Dachshunds: “weiner dogs” because of their elongated, slim, weiner bodies. The look is so cute you can barely keep from hugging them!

What qualities of the two types merge in the chweenie? It has been suggested that the Chihuahua was developed to contain the rat population in Mexican cities, where the mutts used to roam in wholesale dog gangs to find prey. But they graduated to become the darlings of celebrities, especially starlets. Tucked in bags and going with their best human friends to dining establishments, wholesale dog shops, and all around town, the little dogs became a mark of success. As tiny as just two pounds, with straight up ears, long-haired or short-haired, of brindle or tricolor, the Chihuahua is the epitome of the pampering that people do to coddle animal friends. Remember the photographs of Paris Hilton with her fascinating Chihuahua? These little darlings get dressed up; groomed; have trinkets put in their hair, and they nuzzle blissfully with their besotted owners!

The Dachshund is nearly the contrary. It was trained as a working dog. It is a real scent hound, locating its target mainly by scent, although its hearing is very sharp as well. Its broad front, longer floppy ears (that can also perk up straight), squat limbs and extended back make it well-suited for going after burrowing prey and, in fact, it was at first a canine expert in hunting badgers. The Dachshund is amazingly steadfast, but not necessarily enamored of people other than its own. The miniature Dachshund has the characteristics of its bigger counterparts, but presented in a tiny torso. Even as a miniature dog, it is not inclined to exhibit the wholesale dog human worship that the Chihuahua wants.

Put Miniature Dachshund and Chihuahua together and what can you expect? A little mutt with ears that are either straight up or flopped down, barrel chest, extended back, but often without the stumpy limbs of the Dachshund. The Miniature Dachshund/Chihuahua exhibits some of the yappy characteristics of the Chihuahua, but hunting instinct runs deep and the chweenie usually will be enthused about the opportunity to seek out game in his backyard. The cheweenie does not understand that it is a miniature and won’t limit itself to small game, so don’t allow it to get loose in the fields! Don’t count on dressing up your chweenie or transporting it around with you to the upscale wholesale dog grooming salons; they are too “just dog” for the kind of pampering that Chihuahuas naturally inspire.

The chweenie: really, really delightful but rugged. If you bring one home, you won’t have second thoughts

Small Dog Breeds: Small Bodies, Big Hearts

There are many different types of small dog breeds, each having their own unique characteristics and traits. Each dog, of course, is a unique individual, but generally most dogs of a given breed have more similarities than dissimilarities of behavior and personality. Although small dog breeds are often thought of as highly strung and yappy, this needn’t be true at all as long as the dog is cared for correctly, given lots of love and attention, as well as good socialization and training. Small dogs may perhaps not adjust as well to boisterous children and toddlers, but they can do very well with older children and families. Generally, small dog breeds are just ten inches or less high at the shoulder. In most breeds, the male is slightly larger than the female, but the difference is generally small.

It’s extremely easy to love small dogs, and one of their great advantages is that they don’t take up too much room. But there are other, numerous reasons why a small dog is one of the best types of dog you can have in your life. No matter who you are, there is a type of pet that is small enough to fit easily into your life, but with a heart big enough to fill your days with joy. If you’re thinking about getting a new pet, consider any of the small breeds of dogs that you can hold easily and enjoy to the full.

If necessary, a small animal can easily be carried from place to place, and, of course, they are easier to fit in the home as well. When you take your small dog out for a walk you don’t have to be afraid all of the time that he’s going to pull you over. If you have to travel, a small dog is easier to get in and out of the car, and at night he can snuggle into smaller spaces and still be wonderfully comfortable. All this means, of course, that little dogs are ideal for homes that are smaller and more compact in nature, but they are also perfect for those people with larger homes who don’t want to fill all the space up with animals. And when you consider the very wide range of different small dog breeds to choose from – terriers, spaniels, chihuahuas, pomeranians, pugs, dachshunds, etc., etc. – it seems impossible not to find one that is just right for your needs and preferences.

There are many other small dog breeds available so you need to know exactly what you’re looking for. You need to make sure that any new dog – whether a small one or not – fits in with your family, your living space and your lifestyle. Before making a final decision on the breed you want, make sure that you do some thorough research and talk to at least a couple of breeders to find just the right match for you and your family.
