The Herding Abilities Of A Cardigan Welsh Corgi
Today, a Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a breed used for companionship, and proud owners know all about the protective, loyal, affectionate nature of these little canine buddies. While the breed does not require a large amount of exercise, they do benefit from being able to participate in a variety of different competitions. One of the dogs favored activities is sheepdog trials; it may seem strange, considering the stature of the breed, but the Corgi is one of the oldest and most adept herding dogs in the world.
Cardigan Welsh Corgi’s were originally bred to serve many functions, including a watchdog and hunter. Most of the dogs were also exceedingly good at herding cattle and sheep. The exact origin of the breed is unknown; dog breed experts believe the dog’s hails from Wales more than 3,000 years ago and most likely descended from the Teckel dog family, the same as Dachshunds. The dogs are more than likely one of the earliest breeds found on the British Isles and were brought in by the Celts, Central Europeans and Vikings. The “Corgi” name actually finds its roots in ancient meaning, though what it means exactly is open for debate. There are some scholars who claim the name takes its meaning from the dogs herding function. Others disagree and think the name’s meaning is the Welsh word for “tiny dog.”
A Corgi is an ideal example of a breeds form following function; while most people are used to seeing larger breeds being used for animal herding, the low stature and big ears of a Corgi make it well-suited to life as an effective herding dog. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi would herd the sheep or cattle by running up alongside the animals and nipping and barking; the animals are annoyed by this and would occasionally kick at the dogs to show annoyance. The low, elongated body of a Corgi allows it to easily dodge and duck the kicks of the cattle, thus avoiding being fatally injured. With large ears, a Corgi has an acute sense of hearing and could hear the herd animal kicking and knew at the precise moment to move out of the way to avoid being hurt. Like most other herding breeds, a Corgi has an instinctive desire to herd; they will even at times nip at the heels of an owner to get them moving as a herd should. Fortunately, Corgi’s are an intelligent dog breed and they can be trained not to do this.
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a popular breed in the United States and has captured the hearts of people from all around the world. Corgi’s are hearty little dogs and seem to have limited health-related or congenital problems. The dogs tend to exhibit a strong temperament and require early training and socialization in order to reach their full potential and become a suitable family pet. Corgi’s are a very active breed and will happily play and frolic with an owner to the point of near exhaustion.

Showing A Border Terrier In The Earthdog Trials
With their long past history as working hunting dogs, a Border Terrier still retains many of the same hunting instincts as their ancestors. While they have become adaptable to present day obedience and agility trials, the dogs truly excel at Earthdog Trials. Accordingly, more Border Terriers have won the American Kennel Club Earthdog trials than any other type of dog breed. If an owner is seeking a way to become involved in competitions and exercises with their dog, Earthdog trials are an ideal activity.
Different than field or hunting tests, Earthdog trial events are a synthetic exercise in which both dog and prey are totally safe due to a controlled environment. The Border Terrier must maneuver through a series of underground burrows following the scent of a rat, which is kept safely in a cage. Once the dog locates the rat, it must bark, dig or scratch to show that its hunting instincts are well honed.
Earthdog trials are hosted by the AKC, the American Working Terrier Association and other various clubs around America and some places in Europe. While there are some small differences in the Earthdog trials sponsored by the AKC and AWTA, this article focuses on the ones offered by the AKC, to provide owners with an idea of what is involved. In AKC sponsored Earthdog trials, there are four testing classes offered. The novice or beginners class is called Introduction to Quarry, and any dog can be entered regardless of experience or class. With the assistance of a judge, a beginner will participate and discover their hunting qualifications in short 10-foot tunnel.
The second class is called Junior Earthdog, which is a necessary step for those seeking a trophy or title. The Border Terrier must negotiate a 30-foot tunnel that has three turns. In order to succeed, the dog must leave the owners arms, locate the beginning of the tunnel and proceed to the end, where the dog must dig, paw or bark to show the rat has been found. The next skill level is formulated around the same premise, but the dog must show an increased knowledge. In the Senior Earthdog trial, the dog must find the underground tunnel using scent, after finding the rat, the dog must return promptly to the owner after being taken out of the tunnel by a show judge. For the final level, Master Earthdog trial, the dog must locate the proper path to the rat, and there may be side tunnels used as a form of distraction. For the most difficult trial, a handler must remove the dog from the tunnels.
Dog breeds that are eligible to participate in the Earthdog trials include Miniature Schnauzers, Dachshunds and most other terrier breeds. The main difference between an AWTA and AKC trail is that most breeds are allowed into the AWTA events. The AWTA also offers working certificates, and hunting of foxes, raccoons, rats and woodcocks. These dogs can go on to be successful hunters, flushing out game which includes rabbits and fowl.

We were watching this video of a kitten when our dog, Oliver, started searching for the source of the meowing. I love the perplexed head tilts! BTW, he’s a Dachshund mix that we adopted, we’re not exactly sure what else he is. Everyone seems to have a different theory!
