How to Select a Pet Bed
Pets sleep 13 or more hours a day. Choosing the right bed for your pet is a key to ensuring a nice comfortable place to rest. Pet beds come in many different shapes and sizes. Choosing the right one for your pet takes some research.
You must first observe the sleeping habits of your pet to determine if they are nesters, bed hogs or chin resters. Next you should know the length and width of your dog or cat. When you take your pet for its medical check up’s, the vet can give you those measurements. Some pets will sleep curled up while others like to stretch along the bed. How your pet sleeps will reveal the ideal type of bed to purchase. If your pet likes to sleep on your bed or on the sofa that means it prefers a soft, warm spot. Most pets do prefer soft cushioned spots, but there are some dogs who like sleeping on the floor or carpet, especially in places that are not covered. This mainly applies to big dogs with heavy fur.
Most dogs would be most enthusiastic about a lounging bed since they tend to prefer higher sides which make them feel more protected and safe. Some beds are especially good for older arthritic dogs. Burrowing dogs like dachshunds, should have a small blanket they can snuggle under. Cats will prefer a round concave nest, mostly because they are privacy seekers.
Pet beds should be placed away from drafty, high traffic areas which can be disruptive and lead to health problems. A good place for your pet’s bed is next to your bed or in your living room next to the sofa.
Once you have decided on the basic elements for your pet, you will want to define whether the bed will travel with you on trips. Some pet beds are more portable than others. If your dog will not be traveling, consider a sturdier bed such as a sofa bed. The bed should be waterproof and warm enough if it will on occasion be moved outside to the patio or balcony.
Due to the huge variety of pet beds available today choosing the right one can be a daunting task. One good rule to follow is to make sure the quality of the bedding is good. Sometimes dogs like chewing on their beds so choose carefully to avoid any digestion issues.
Cogne’s Winter Wonderland
As the mother of young children, I have fantasized about the perfect winter get-away. My children, now 8 and 10, are fairly independent, but winter activities, be it skiing or sledding, inevitably require extra effort on the part of parents to assist. Socks pulled up, pants leg down, snow pants up, inner pant leg back up, so pull it down, left ski boot on, right ski boot on, left one hurts, left one off — Add to that the necessity of driving from hotel to ski rental shop, a shuttle to the slopes and back again, and a “relaxing” winter family vacation becomes nothing more than a different kind of work.
Imagine instead a gracious manor house in a valley amidst the towering mountains of Valle ‘d’Aosta, Italy which just happens to have won the 2006 Spa Trophy awarded by Relais Chateau. Imagine further that this hotel overlooks a parco neve (snow park) complete with cross-country trails, small downhill course and tubing with roullez tappez (electric side-walk) to carry you back up the hill, a trampoline and lounge chairs on the snow, warmed by the sun’s rays (sunglasses and sunscreen a must). If you dare, imagine further that three steps from the hotel and the park is a ski rental at about nine Euros (12 U.S.) a day, and a five minute walk down the road, a chairlift for more advanced skiers at about 10 Euro a day (13 US). Tired kids? Throw their skis in the hotels shed for a while (every room has its’ own locker) and warm up inside with a cup of tea or hot chocolate in front of a noce carved fireplace.
Sound like a fantasy? Such a place really exists at the HOTEL BELLEVUE and it’s not located in a fabricated 1980s ski village that sprang up overnight. It exists in Cogne, an 11th century Italian mountain village at 1534 meters altitude. It lies within the border of the National Park “Gran Paradiso,” designated as such in 1922 for its beauty and unique fogliage and fauna. The hotel itself has so many benefits for families, it is difficult to know where to start. The spa area with its pool and Jacuzzi with recliners and hydro- massage is enjoyable for all but the smallest visitors. As for particular spa treatments, they are for the enjoyment of Mom and Dad, while smaller visitors enjoy the Children’s Playroom which contains authentic desks from A 19th century school house, wooden toys, bouncing balls, a puppet theater, legos and other surprises. Next door to this room is a family movie theater for evening viewing. The hotel also runs three restaurants — one with a Michelen Star. We really enjoyed a gastronomic evening of “family fondue” at the Bar à Fromage in front of a roaring fire. At La Brassierie du Bon Bec, we had La
Braserade where “braciere” was put on our table, with sausages, potatoes and Reblochon cheese to be melted. At the end of the dish, crepes suzettes are made directly on the braciere. The loving hand four generations of the Jeantet-Roullet family is evident in every nook and cranny of this family-owned hotel. No where have I seen such a combination of rustic charm and sophisticated elegance.
But the fun does not stop at the doors of the hotel. The aero club Valle D’Aosta will take you flying, gliding or parachuting over and around Monte Bianco/Mont Blanc. A horse drawn sled will also take you for a memorable ride through the snowy valley of Valnontey. Centro di Turismo Equestre “Le Traineau” +39 333 314 7248. We opted to spend our non-sking, non-spa time training to become the leader of a dog sled team with Signor Genta. The kids were safely tucked inside a dog sled and team lead by a professional. I was given my own sled, some instruction, and off I went, the leader of my own team. Although thrilling, I felt like I was on some wild ride at Disney where the brakes malfunctioned. It was great fun, but is definitely for those of you who find yourself in excellent physical shape (I am not, unfortunately, in this sector of the population) and who like a good thrill (I am at least part of the second group). Sled dogs, I learned, really like to pull, the faster the better, and it takes good balance and strength to keep WITH the sled. Next time, I’d opt for a “kid” seat, tucked away in a toasty sled, letting the professionals do all the work, listening to the snow swish by, taking in the scenery and the passion of the dogs whisking me through a field of white powder.

Yeast Infections / Candida In Canines
Yeasts are single cell living creatures, which can be found on the surface of all living things, including a dog’s body. It is usual that yeasts live on the mucous membranes in the digestive tract. There is one particular group of yeasts, which are known as Candida albicans and they live in the digestive tract and in order to survive, they consume such things such as fats and sugars.
When a dog has a healthy immune system, the body can destroy the yeasts. But when a dog has a weak immune system, then the yeast, which feeds opportunistically may reproduce in large amounts which cause toxins that strongly affect the immune system, preventing it from working correctly.
It is at this point that a lot of health problems can occur as the system becomes altered. So it is important to remember that too much growth of yeast toxins can affect your dog’s immune system, nervous system and endocrine system. As these particular systems are all connected, then yeast toxins can cause major allergies, infections in the bladder, skin disorders and several other different health problems.
The cause of yeast infections, like Candida, comes from grain-based foods and drugs, chemicals and poisons. Cooked food, such as canned or bagged food will destroy the natural immune system. Also antibiotics can cause yeast infections because they kill the good bacteria that would normally be used to fight the yeast. Steroids that shut down the body’s ability to fight back, and other drugs, such as Frontline, Advantage, Heartguard, etc. are all reasons for the occurrence of yeast infections.
There are various types of treatments being used to treat yeast infections. Although drugs are a temporary fix for yeast problems, they do not in actual fact eliminate the cause of the symptom. It is important to find the cause so that it can be started.
As with any type of infection, prevention is the cure. It is important to put your dog on a raw meat and bone diet immediately, along with supplements to boost and balance the immune system. This will also cleanse the toxins from the body and re-establish a friendly bacteria, which will effectively help to fight the yeast and increase the level of nutrition in your dog. This must be a permanent lifestyle change in order to prevent your dog getting any more yeast infections.

All Done By the Fence
We have kept a dog for almost eight years, and he has become a family member to us. This little puppy concerns on everything in our house. He would give a bark to tell us that the sofa has been moved, or to remind us to put a traveling bag back to the original place. Undoubtedly, things we cannot bear would also annoy him.
Despite of those in common, we do have different opinions on one thing, which pleases us very much but bothers him a lot. That is a fence, which keeps him in a restrict place.
Although we have taken the little puppy as a part of our family, he is forbidden to get into our bedrooms. Therefore, we decided to set a moveable fence to stop him. Compared wire mesh fence with wooden palisade fence, we found that welded wire mesh feels much colder and heavier than wood, so in welded wire mesh, wire mesh fence, palisade fencing, we chose the palisade fence. The fence is not high. It perfectly stops the puppy and makes no trouble for people passing by. Whenever we don’t want to be bothered by him, we will turn to the fence for help.
Late at night, we have to say good night to our naughty puppy. He would go back to his enclosure unless we give him a ham sausage. If we forget to do that, he would bark near the fence and not stop shouting until he gets his sausages.
A fence is like an obstacle set by policemen. To a large extent, it depends on one’s self-discipline. In recent days, our puppy frequently breaks the fence out. He was closed on the balcony, but unexpectedly appeared at our living room. After examination, we caught sight of a crack, which exactly allows the puppy curl through.
We forgave his lack of self-discipline for several times, however, he didn’t feel contented. After those trials, he has taken it for granted that we agreed with him. Gradually, he frequently went out from his fence. One morning, I nearly trample on the crouching sleeping puppy by the door of my bedroom. Apparently, the fence should be fixed more firmly, so that the puppy cannot easily get out by his claws.
After lunch, I started to mend the fence.
Quickly, the puppy figured out that and flew into a rage temper. He ran after me and kept roaring at the fence. Obviously, our smart puppy had seen me trough and began to make a protest against the “bad” idea.
Protest is protest, but democracy should be closely linked with centralism. Protest means nothing to me when I don’t want to give you the democracy right. Smilingly, I got some tools and put a block on the door of the fence.
It just took ten more minutes to finish the work, and just the ten more minutes drove the puppy almost crazy. He angrily went around me, shouted at me and carried off my tools. Luckily, I had kept only one puppy, or there would be a horrible group accident.
Protest objected. The fence had been fixed again. The puppy cannot push it away by his claws any more. When I rose my feet, I almost fell to the ground which was very slippery. My little naughty puppy just relieved himself on the place where I squatted.

Keep Your Best Friend Happy & Healthy with these Top Tips
Do you really know all that there is to know about your beautiful dogs nutritional needs? Many well meaning pet owners think they are doing what is best for their dogs when it comes to food, but the truth is that they are relying more on pure instinct than science.
Lets be clear about this, nutrition is not a guessing game, even when it comes to your pooch. Think about it for a moment, if you were left to feed yourself based only on what you craved for, and had no knowledge of what your body needs to function, would you be eating 5 servings of fruit and veggies a day, or would you head straight for the burger and fries section at the supermarket?
So, lets look at some vital tips which will help keep your pooch happy and healthy.
1. Cover all of the bases.
A dogs diet can be as complex as any humans (including yours), and it is absolutely essential that you, as an owner, hit all of the vital nutritional bases. A deficiency of certain vitamins and nutrients can lead to upset tummies, overly dry or oily skin, brittle bones, weight issues, and, in some of the worst cases, death.
A balanced and proper diet is the building block of your dogs overall health, and if he does not get the right blend of nutrients, the most impeccable care otherwise will not mean a thing. But with the right diet, his defences against disease and disorders are infinitely stronger than a dog whose owner does not put much thought into an eating plan.
2. Mix it up
For the most part, pre packaged food will help you cover all of the major nutritional requirements that a healthy, fairly young dog has. But sadly, this is where many owners trip up simply because of the ease of the decision; Most caring dog owners think that the major choice is between dry and moist food, when in reality the best diet you can provide your dog is one varied in ingredients, textures, and nutritional value.
Wolves in the wild were carnivores, and that instinct remains still with our modern day dog; They continue to hunt prey (poor Kitty), love sausage flavoured treats, and adore the great treat they get when crunching on a bone. Those varied elements should give you a little bit of insight into how diverse your dogs diet can be.
3. Move beyond meat.
Building some portion of his diet from meat gives you many of the crucial nutrients he needs for energy and growth, but he also needs fiber and carbohydrates to aid in digestion and stability.
You could throw down a bowl of dry food every day and maybe give him a treat of moist food once a month, but how would you like it if the tables were turned and he insisted on feeding you pancakes every day for the rest of your life? Not such a sunny outlook, is it?
4. Make it a real meal.
Listen, nobody ever said you had to rely on a bag or can of food to feed your dog. You cook for your family all the time. Well how about your dog, does he or she not deserve similar treatment? Most owners say they would love to cook for their pups but just do not know where to start, and that is where I can make some further suggestions.
There are a number of books available which offer very mouth watering recipes for dogs, and they have some great suggestions. Simply do a search for Dog Recipes, and you will be surprised at what you get.
5. Give him some green.
Your dog needs a well balanced diet, and the best way to accomplish that is through a wide variety of ingredients. Did you know that many dogs love veggies? In fact, if your dog likes to nibble on grass, he may appreciate some of the veggie oriented recipes. Give it a shot and see what you, and your dog, think.
After all, the worst that could happen is an improvement in your Best Friends health!
