I live in Spain with my very nice owners ( parents ) and spend my day sleeping , chasing my ball , eating and surfing the net. I hope to learn to drive this year and that would make going for a walk much easier.

Welcome to my site , I hope to be able to update it often and with interesting weiner related articles , photos and plenty of videos sent to me by other computer trained weiners. I plan on becoming a world wide superstar in the next 12 months with photos of me splash over the pages of WOOF magazine and a number one hit single with a new version of hound dog. In the meantime enjoy my site and I have started the ball rolling with a short video of me and my friend Graham playing in the garden.

Choosing The Right Dog Breed

  • March 9, 2010 8:55 am

Hence you need to be extremely careful while selecting dogs especially because such a huge number of dog breeds exist. Some dogs that are bigger in size will require huge amount of space and hence you can’t possibly make them live in a small apartment. So how do you choose the right dog out of the 400 dog breeds that exist? It is quite simple: all you need is to answer the following questions and you will be able to figure out the exact breed of dogs that you can adopt.

Q1: What dog size is good for you?

Never make the mistake of asking for a “good-sized” dog because for some breeders it simply means that you need dogs weighing around 25 pounds while for other breeders it means 75 pounds. Go on to the internet and visit some of the websites that feature all dog breeds. Check out the size and weight and then take a decision. Be clear about what you need.

Q2: How much space do you have at your home?

Is your home an apartment with three rooms and a balcony or is it a villa or a farm house. These are important aspects and need to be considered because some dogs need a lot of space. So if you are in a villa, you can go for different large dog breeds like the Doberman Pincher, German Shepherd Dog, St. Bernard, Greyhound etc. These are large guard dogs and very efficient. If you have a large home a Labrador retriever, Golden retriever, Irish Setter or a Dalmatian would be just perfect. If you are staying in an apartment then small sized dogs like cocker-spaniel, Dachshund, Pomeranian, Mini schnauzer, and Chihuahua would be just great.

Q3: How much exercise can your dog have?

There are some dog breeds like the retrievers and the Doberman that require a lot of exercise, running around, jumping and fetching exercises. There are dogs like Pomeranian and Chihuahua who need just a small walk in the park. You need to consider this aspect because the overall health of your dog and his growth will depend on the amount of exercise he can get. If you have a busy work schedule then it is better that you keep a dog who doesn’t need too much of exercise.

Q4: How much grooming can you cope up with?

Some dogs require regular grooming especially those dog breeds that are hairy. Grooming is necessary because long hair is one of the causes of ticks and other skin problems in dogs. All dogs need grooming and some just need more. So you need to consider various aspects like the amount of time you can devote on grooming and the kind of monthly budget you have for your dog.

Three Traditional American Recipes

  • March 8, 2010 3:02 pm

There is no denying that American-style food has had a very large impact on cuisine all over the world! No, I don’t just mean fast-food, either! Traditional American foods such as the Coney Island-style hot dog, potato chips, fried chicken, and hamburgers with fries are just a few things that, while not all being essentially American, have reached the world through popularity in America. While it is hard to narrow them down, I have included in this article three of my favorite American recipes. I hope you enjoy them!

Oven-Fried Chicken

Ingredients:
1 cup low-fat buttermilk
4 (8-ounce) chicken breast halves (with bones)
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup cracker meal
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
2 tbsp butter

Directions:
In a shallow bowl, combine the buttermilk and chicken. Be sure to turn the chicken to fully coat it with the buttermilk. In another shallow dish, mix together the cracker meal and flour. Take the chicken from the buttermilk and place it onto a sterile surface. Sprinkle the chicken with half a teaspoon of salt and pepper. Dredge the chicken through the four mixture and shake off the excess bits of flour, then set the chicken aside. Repeat this process with each chicken breast. Melt the butter in an oven-proof skillet and cook the chicken on both sides until golden brown. Remove the pan from the range and place it in an oven preheated at 425 degrees F for about half an hour. Fried chicken is traditionally served with mashed potatoes and cole slaw.

Biscuits and Sausage Gravy

Ingredients:
(gravy)
1lb sausage meat
3 tbsp flour
2 – 3 cups milk
Salt and pepper to taste
(biscuits)
2 cups self-raising flour
1/4 cup of shortening
1/4 cup of milk

Directions:
Crumble the sausage meat in a frying pan and cook until the meat is no longer pink. Add in the flour one tablespoon at a time and stir quickly. Keep stirring until a paste forms, and crank up the heat to high. Add in the milk, stir, and then add the salt. This mixture should be quite thick. To make the biscuits, mix together the shortening and flour using a pastry cutter, if you have one. Add in the milk, stirring as you do so. Knead the dough in the bowl, then transfer it onto a floured surface. Roll it out and cut into circular shapes (I find a drinking glass works well for this). Place the biscuits on a baking sheet and bake at 425 degrees F for about 10 – 15 minutes, until the biscuits are golden brown. Serve the biscuits open-faced or cut up, with sausage gravy poured on top.

Pecan Pie

Ingredients:
3 eggs
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup corn syrup
2 tbsp unsalted butter
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups pecans
1 (10-inch) pie crust (unbaked)

Directions:
Beat the eggs together, then add the corn syrup, granulated sugar, and brown sugar. Melt the butter and add it to the egg mixture. Mix well while adding in the vanilla and pecans. Carefully pour this mixture into the pie crust (you don’t want to over-fill it). Bake at 350 degrees F for about 50 minutes, or until the pie has set. Allow the pie to cool before serving. Traditionally served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Do Dog Breeds Allergies Differ?

  • March 8, 2010 8:56 am

When we think about canine allergies, it may not even occur to us that among the various dog breeds, allergies and their prevalence may differ. However, particularly when we are talking about skin allergies, there are dog breeds allergies seem to favor.

Dogs Susceptible to Allergies
Among the dog breeds allergies, particularly skin allergies, are commonplace in are the English Bulldog, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, and Dalmation, to name but a few popular breeds. Shar Peis and boxers, with their skin folds, are also dog breeds allergies seem to be more common in.
If you are looking at owning any of those breeds, and dog breeds allergies may be more likely to occur in, you should be prepared that allergies, and their symptoms, treatment and care, may become part of your duty as a dog owner.

Dog Breeds Allergies Are Less Likely In
The good news  is that just as there are dog breeds allergies seem to favor, there are those where they are more rare. These include popular breeds like the German Shepherd, Dachshund, Doberman Pinscher, Poodle and others. Choosing from dog breeds allergies are less likely to appear in is one way of trying to avoid the additional care required by an allergy prone dog, it’s no guarantee, since, although rare, those allergies are not unheard of.

As with dog breeds allergies are more common in, you should know there is always a chance you may become the owner of a dog with allergies, and the needs that accompany that.

What to Look for
Excessive itching, scratching, biting or chewing on themselves is almost certainly a sign of allergy, whether flea, skin, contact or food. Stomach troubles, swelling and hives are also almost always signs of allergy, and should be reported to your vet immediately.

What to Do if You Suspect an Allergy
Whether you choose dog breeds allergies are common in, or those where they aren’t, you should be on the lookout for the common symptoms of allergy – itching, scratching, biting, hives and so on. If your dog displays any of these symptoms, chances are your vet will need to do an IST or ELISA test, to determine the cause – it may be a flea allergy, or an allergy to something in the dog’s environment.

If the tests your vet runs on your dog returns a positive result for allergy, you will need to investigate proper treatment and management, so that your dog’s quality of life is not affected by his problem.

So you see, which taking care to choose a dog breed allergies are rarer in may help in some small measure, but it may not be a permanent solution. Also bear in mind that like humans, dogs aren’t necessarily born with an allergy. Sometimes, they develop an allergic reaction to a particular substance later in life. You may even find that the food they’ve been eating for years suddenly produces an allergic reaction, or maybe a move to a new home triggers an attack. Whatever happens though, stay calm, find out more, and help your best friend deal with their allergy.

Open Til Midnight: Late Night Eats in Austin

After Midnight: Late Night Bites in Austin

Austin’s exciting and colorful night life is one of its major attractions for tourists and residents alike. But after the clubs, concerts, or bar-hopping, the age-old question always arises of where to eat after midnight when most traditional restaurants have called it quits for the night. While Austin is not “the city that never sleeps,” it’s still possible to find great food when you’re dining late, no matter where the evening’s entertainment winds up.

For breakfast anytime, day or night, the Kerbey Lane Café offers a variety of Mexican-influenced choices. Eggs, bacon, and omelets top the menu, joining more traditional diner fare like burgers and sandwiches. Health-conscious night owls will enjoy the wide range of salads, while the popular fajita platters are available in beef, chicken, or Portobello mushroom varieties and are the perfect choice after an evening of live music and cold brews. An extensive dessert menu adds the finishing touch to the meal.

The Dog & Duck Pub offers classic English and Irish pub fare, including shepherd’s pie and Scotch eggs; fish and chips and onion rings are especially recommended at this Austin establishment. Open until 2 a.m. with a limited menu, be prepared to share your space with a variety of dogs and their owners. As its name suggests, the Dog & Duck is dog-friendly, so it’s best to watch out for the water dishes on the pub floor, especially after a long night of drinking.

Katz’s Deli is open 24 hours and serves up traditional New York delicatessen fare, from bagels and lox to a wide array of sandwiches and salads. Dinner selections include the half-pound beef bacon-wrapped sirloin filet, freshly grilled salmon, and a variety of knockwurst and sausages with sauerkraut. Corned beef and cabbage with boiled potato will appeal to the Irish in the crowd, while potato pancakes are always a favorite among the deli’s diverse offerings.

For late-night barbecue, Sam’s Bar-B-Que offers the full range of smoky goodness. From brisket and ribs to sausage and mutton, Sam’s serves it up hot and spicy until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, 2 a.m. on Sunday night and weeknights. Sam’s signature Salsa Chicken is a revelation, while his Carolina Pulled Pork is smoked for 16 hours over an oak wood fire and then spiced for that authentic flavor. Baby back ribs are slow-marinated for a rich burst of flavor, and then slow cooked over a low oak flame.  Garlic bread accompanies all orders, and sides include potato salad, macaroni salad, cole slaw and chili beans.

Serving Asian food until 2 a.m. every day except Sunday, 888 Vietnamese Restaurant serves up authentic Vietnamese, Chinese and Thai food in a skillful blend of classic and contemporary flavor profiles. Along with the traditional spring rolls and pho, 888 offers a number of vegan-friendly menu items and chef specials. American-influenced Chinese dishes like General Tso’s chicken are excellent but predictable, but the wide variety of Thai curries steals the show.

After a night out enjoying the multitude of cultural and entertainment options Austin has to offer, visitors will be glad to know that a number of local restaurants are available to serve the late-night crowd. Austin is certain to have something to satisfy every taste, be it for entertainment or for dining options, even after midnight.

Health Issues for the Labrador Retriever

  • March 7, 2010 8:58 am

Most dog breeds possess a breed specific health problem usually to do with the way their bodies are designed. The Dachshund suffers from back problems due to its low set back and the short-necked breeds such as the Bulldog can be prone to breathing difficulties.

The Labrador Retriever is no exception to the rule and probably the most common health issue this dog encounters is hip dysplasia. Canine hip dysplasia is an issue for many dog breeds. The problem lies in the dog’s hips basically there is a problem when the joints that normally make the hip work effectively become loose.

Labrador Retriever information pertaining to the dog’s health will all mention hip dysplasia. Basically the femur does not sit snugly within the pelvic socket as it once used to, the condition can vary considerably from dog to dog. It could be deemed as very mild right through to the other end of the spectrum and be very serious.

Occasionally a Labrador Retriever may have hip dysplasia but not really display any symptoms for awhile, then as time goes by the dog may start to show signs of arthritis. A dog might show difficulty in rising from a sleeping position and they may ‘telegraph’ their legs, meaning that they will hold the affected limb out straight. This will be done in an effort to ease the discomfort felt in the limb. Information on Labrador Retrievers very often touches on the subject of hip dysplasia.

Generally speaking hip dysplasia is an inherited health problem for dogs however the problem can be encountered for other reasons. Younger dogs can also suffer from it especially if they enjoy a life of jumping over fences, walls and other various obstacles. The problem arises in Labrador Retrievers under the age of two years because their actual joints within their hips have not yet developed properly.

When the dog jumps a lot it is literally over stretching its hip joints and they are being worked by the dog way beyond the Labrador Retrievers capability. Generally speaking, and I stress this is only a general observation, the Labrador Retriever will begin to display signs of hip dysplasia prior to it reaching a year old.

The dog may limp every so often or appear stiff when rising. If a dog is affected at a reasonably young age then the chances run high that they will suffer from arthritis when older. A dog’s hips can actually be x-rayed at the age of four months although most vets prefer to leave this until the animal is at least two years of age, this way the Labrador Retriever’s hips are completely developed.

You can request to view a puppy’s registration papers prior to purchasing as these will show that the puppy has been hip scored and graded accordingly. There are treatments available to help dogs suffering from hip dysplasia just simply research some Labrador Retriever information specifically relating to the topic. Just make sure to buy from a breeder who screens their puppies for hip dysplasia and gives a puppy warranty.

4-day Camping Menu Plan

  • March 6, 2010 3:02 pm

A family camping menu should be:

1. Easy and quick to prepare.

2. Requires only a few ingredients and

3. Those ingredients are easy to store at camp (not prone to spilling, spoiling, space-hogging).

Here is our family’s 4-Day Camping menu plan. We have tweaked it over the years and I’m sure you will tweak it some more for your family’s style and needs.

4-Day Camping Food Menu Plan

1st Night: Lloyds BBQ Ribs, corn, coleslaw and potato salad

Wrap ribs in heavy-duty foil, heat, open a can of corn and serve with ready-made coleslaw and potato salad. First night is celebration night. You’ve put up the tent, you’ve build a campfire, you’ve unpacked your gear. So kick back and relax. By the way, Costco is my favorite place to get a big tub of potato salad and coleslaw.

DAY 1 ==========

Breakfast: Blueberry Pancakes, sausage and eggs

Lunch: Chili dog and leftover coleslaw/potato salad

Dinner: Grilled marinated steak tips, baked potatoes & camping onions. If no grill: Easy Pork Chops and bread rolls

Dessert: S’mores

DAY 2 ==========

Breakfast: Cereal and fruit, corny cakes

Lunch: Tortellini and tomato sauce

Dinner: Meat loaf sandwich & Italian Wedding Soup (canned)

Dessert: Mini Camping Pies

DAY 3 ==========

Dinner: Ham, beans and baked sweet potatoes

Dessert: Peach Mallows

DAY 4 ==========

Breakfast: Pancakes, sausage and eggs

Lunch: Foil-wrapped Surprise (Whatever’s left in camp kitchen)

Do we stick religiously to this menu plan? Of course not. But being prepared gives me the freedom to be more creative and flexible.

The recipes are pretty easy to guess. If you need the camping recipes, tips and shortcuts for this 4-day family camping menu, email us at camping_menu@aweber.com and it will be sent out to you automatically.

The menu does require a camping stove. If you don’t own a camping stove, watch our video on the 4 criteria to look for in a camping stove at www.joyofcamping.tv
